Google Plus Back Links Are nofollow Links

So it wasn't all that long ago that SEO professionals were advising that we should embrace Google Plus and post on it regularly to (potentially) improve website SEO and your SERP position.

We all jumped on this idea, patting ourselves on the back that we were possibly ahead of the game - we knew something that no-one else yet knew.

How quickly things change, now all links in Google Plus are nofollow links. This means that anything you post is for advertising purposes only - no link juice will now flow into your site and benefit it SEO-wise.

I'm not sure if there is a connection between this and a drop in our position for Fizz Web Design on page one of Google, for in effect, all my efforts on Google + have been wasted - the rug has been pulled out from under my feet. And I'm most definitely not alone.

There was a suggestion, as this change was discreetly rolled by out Google, that some links were still dofollow, for example it was blogged and shared that if you clicked on the link button to post a link in your latest update rather than just copy-and-paste the link it would reward you by remaining dofollow - but not any more as you can see from the image below.

This is using Firebug, the infinitely handy add-on for Firefox to enable you to debug web code and read the code on sites that aren't your own.

I guess this article is just a simple heads up really - it's not the first time that SEO professionals and web masters have been mislead into believing certain sites continue to provide dofollow links. Applegate is another one. Often linked to in various SEO blogs as one of a number of sites that will provide a dofollow back link if you sign up. Well I can confirm that - at least with the free option - this is not the case.

So don't waste your time unnecessarily; blogging and Social Media updating is extremely time-consuming - especially without any reward! Simply use good ol' Firebug to check.
